Ramming tools can be used to help overcome hydro-lock conditions during the horizontal directional drill (HDD) pullback process. Should a pipe become immobilized during the pullback process, a rammer is attached to the product pipe and the percussive action helps to free the pipe. This percussive action can also be used during the pullback process to keep the pipe moving and prevent high levels of pullback stress.

Washover casings are used in horizontal directional drilling applications when difficult soil conditions exist. The washover casing is rammed through the difficult area of soil at the desired angle. This provides a friction free section to guide down hole or mud motors through rocky soils and provides a friction-free section for product pullback.

Stuck pipe can be extracted with ramming tools so that another bore can be completed. In a failed pullback, a rammer is attached to the product pipe. The impact force of the rammer combined with the static pullback is used to extract the stuck pipe.

Ramming tools can be used to recover expensive stuck drill stems. The rammer is attached to the drill stem with a fabricated adaptor and the impact force of the rammer combined with the static pullback is used to extract the stuck drill stem.
