The history of Big Apple Farm supply traces all the way back to a small country store opened by G.W. Apple, Sr. in 1897. The store was located a few miles west of Reidsville on Hwy 158 and carried groceries and general hardware. In 1926 G.W. moved his store to downtown Reidsville and expanded his wares to include farm supplies, feed, and seed.

Within a few years the business had thrived and expanded to include Big Apple Farm Supply, Big Apple Food Stores, and G.W. Apple and Son's. Big Apple Food Stores was a grocery business with three locations and G.W. Apple and Son's was a commercial warehouse servicing Big Apple Food Stores and other local businesses. The three divisions were incorporated together into a partnership consisting of G.W. Sr. and three of his seven sons: G.W. Jr., D.R. "Durwood", and John. G.W. Jr. worked primarily with the Food Stores, Durwood with the Farm Supply, and John with the warehouse but all four members of the partnership were very involved with every division of the business.

From the end of World War II until 1960 G.W. Sr. worked closely with his three sons. In 1960 he left the partnership to his sons to begin a retirement that consisted of daily employment at Big Apple Food Stores. In 1964 it became advantageous for the three brothers to dissolve their partnership and form three separate corporations with each taking ownership of the business they were most heavily vested in.

In 1961 Big Apple Farm Supply moved into its current location on Market Street in Reidvsille. Durwood ran the operation for many years, eventually to be joined by two of his sons; Ike and Tommy. At the time of his death in 1996 Durwood still worked closely with Ike and Tommy as the three of them managed the business together. With the addition of Ike's son Ross and Tommy's son David, Big Apple Farm Supply hopes to continue to serve the community for many years to come.
